Gorilla Tours

One of the most exciting safaris East Africa is the Gorilla Tours.

In 2006, a new survey was carried out to update the gorilla population. There are about 650-700 gorillas remaining in the world of mountains gorillas. The numbers are shared between Uganda, Rwanda and Congo, which are all part of the Virunga Conservation Area.
Uganda has the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest which is the gorilla sanctuary. Some of the gorilla families have been habituated so as to allow tourists to track these beautiful primates. There are currently 10 families available for tracking in Uganda Bwindi Impenetrable, eight in Rwanda Parc Nazionale des Volcans and 6 in Congo Virunga National Park.

Mountains gorillas are peaceful vegetarian animals. Their diet mainly consists of foliage. They mostly enjoy the tender bamboo shoots, as well as the bark of eucalyptus trees. The gorilla family is led by the male silverback, which is actually very knowledgeable about the medicinal plants and herbs. After eating the gorillas rest a few hours before feeding again. While resting, the young ones play around. In the evening, the group, which does not have a fixed resting place, will form a nest for the overnight. The nest is made of bamboo sticks and other broad leaves which also act as a blanket against the cold. Gorillas can live up to 45 years and the silverback weighs about 200 kg while the female between 80 to 120kg.
