About Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest peak in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. This mountain is a stratovolcano located in central Kenya, just south of the equator, and it consists of three main peaks, namely: Batian, Nelion, and Lenana. The highest point is Batian, which stands at 5,199 meters above sea level, followed by Nelion at 5,188 meters.

Mount Kenya is a product of volcanic activity that began about 3 million years ago, during the Pliocene period. The initial stage of its formation involved the eruption of ash and lava from vents that formed the current tuff cones and lava flows that make up the lower slopes. These were then covered by subsequent lava flows that formed the middle and upper slopes.

Over the years, erosion and other environmental factors have contributed to shaping the mountain, resulting in its current distinct features and landscape. Glaciers and snowfields also feature at the upper elevations of the mountain, a characteristic that is rather unusual for a mountain located so close to the equator.

Mount Kenya’s natural beauty, unique flora and fauna, and challenging climbing routes have made it a popular destination for mountaineers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts. The mountain and its surrounding area are also important for wildlife, with several rare and endangered species of flora and fauna living within the mountain’s ecosystem
