Lake Mburo National Park is one of the smallest National Parks in Uganda, situated in southwestern Uganda in Kiruhura district. This park is known for its variety of herbivorous animals and it is also the only park in the country where one can go for wildlife viewing on the back of a horse.
Despite the fact that the park does not have all of the big five animals, it has several other animals such as the Giraffe, Warthog, Hippo, Zebra, various Antelope species, Hyenas, and two of the big fives which are the Buffalo and the Leopard on a lucky day since they tend to masquerade in trees.
Lake Mburo National Park is a very special place every part of it is alive with; a variety of animals and bird species, interests, and colors contains an extensive area of wetland one of the only two such habitats to be included within a National Park in Uganda.
The harbors several species of mammals which include; Burchell’s Zebras, Impala, African Buffaloes, and lots of bird species. Comprising bill storks which are found nowhere else in the country.
Its sculptured landscape with rolling grassy hills and idyllic lake shore (lake Mburo Shores) has a varied mosaic of habitats forest galleries, seasonal and permanent swamps and rich acacia wood valleys which all support a wealth of wildlife.

History of the park
The park was initially gazetted as a controlled hunting area in 1933 and upgraded to a game reserve in 1963, the farmers in the nearby community continued to violate the law by grazing their cattle in this area until 1983 when it was officially announced as a national park.
The Banyankole living in this area refused to subdue to the president by then called Obote’s rules and were therefore hostile to the park’s formation. In 1986 after NRM came into power, their rebellious tendencies reduced and the prosperity of the park commenced.
The fact that this park borders several farms since the area is famous for cattle keeping, you will definitely get the chance to see herds of the long-horned Ankole cattle.
What to See in Lake Mburo National Park Uganda
The park is only 260 sq. km being the smallest of the Uganda’s savanna National Parks. Its mosaic habitat, dry hillside, rocky outcrops, bushes thickets, open and wooded savanna forests, lakes and swamps are home to a surprising diversity of plants and animals.
Species to encounter on your Uganda Safari to Lake Mburo national park: This little park hosts a variety of animals, that is to say 68 mammal species, including a large number of impalas (the antelope from which “Kampala” is named after), Uganda kobs, zebras, Ankole cattle, buffaloes, topis, leopards, spotted hyenas, waterbucks, warthogs, oribi, bushbucks, duikers. There are 315 bird species, including red-faced barbet, crested crane, shoebill stork, papyrus yellow warbler. The vegetation is dominated by an open Savannah of Acacia trees, Olea and Boscia.
Wildlife in the park
This park gives you the opportunity to get into contact with several animals such as the Zebra, Hippo, Impala, Warthog, Common Eland, African Buffalo, Jackal, Giraffes, occasionally the Leopard and over 300 different bird species. The climate in Lake Mburo national park is tropical with unreliable rainfall that leads to low pastures for the wildlife but fortunately, this condition also makes wildlife easier to spot.
Lake Mburo national park has over 13 small lakes in the entire park with 5 on the border of the park. This park is the home for many endangered species of the birds including the rare Ciccild fish species which have reduced in the main lake and the park also gives refuge to the Afro tropical migrant birds in the wooded savannah with the acacia thicket and the grasslands.

Lake Mburo national park is packed with a lot of mind-blowing and thrilling activities such as morning and evening game drives where you will see the animals in the park. Additionally, there is birdwatching, the ideal spots for bird watching include the swampy valleys of Miriti, the Warukiri as well as the roadsides between Rwonyo camp as well as jetty.
