Where to Go for Bird Watching Tour in Rwanda? Book with Confidence

Nyungwe Forest National Park

This stunning and old tropical evergreen forest, which is primarily known for the 13 species of resident primates, is arguably the most exciting for bird watching tour in Rwanda. Nyungwe Forest is divided by a winding tarmac road, and the topography contains numerous steep slopes.

Birders can find most of the Albertine Rift resident endemics along the road, including the remarkable “painted” Rwenzori Turaco, Handsome Francolin, Mountain Black Boubou, and Rwenzori Batis. Additionally visible are Stripe-breasted Tit and Strange Weaver. The sought-after Red-collared Mountain Babbler can currently only be safely found in Nyungwe Forest.

Volcanoes National Park

A renowned home to mountain gorillas, two troops of recently acclimated golden monkeys, and 180 different species of birds can all be found in this park. This makes Volcanoes national park an exciting bird-watching tour destination in Rwanda. The terrain consists primarily of steep volcanic slopes and is well situated within the Virunga volcano chain. Much of the Afro-montane forest below 2,500 meters have been cleared for agriculture.

Higher up, there is moorland, marsh, and grassland, with Giant Lobelias occasionally being a notable feature. Most of the habitat is made up of dense bamboo stands and Hagenia woods between 2,500 and 3,500 meters. Numerous Albertine Rift endemics are resident birds, including the Handsome Francolin, the coveted and magnificent Rwenzori Turaco, the Dusky and Shelley’s Crimson wings, and Archer’s Robin-chat.

Akagera National Park

Akagera national park is not only a wildlife safari destination but a bird-watching tour in Rwanda. Savanna, relatively open grassland, and Papyrus swamps are the dominant features of the park in eastern Rwanda. Many widely dispersed African birds, including Bennett’s Woodpecker, headed Black Chat, White-Black-collared Barbet, Tabora Cisticola, and Miombo Wren-warbler, can be found in the acacia savanna.

The best place to look for the extremely rare Ring-necked Francolin is probably Akagera. On the grounds of the Akagera Game Lodge, look for the rare Souza’s shrike as well as the highly specialized Red-faced Barbet, an acacia specialist. Brown Parrot, White-winged Black Tit, Barefaced Go-Away Bird, and Sooty Chat are additional species worth searching for.
