Different Members of the African Big Five Species – What to see on Big Five Adventures in Tanzania

African Elephant (Loxodonta africana)

Also known as the giants of the African savannas, the African elephant is the largest land mammal a must see on your Big Five Adventures in Tanzania. The male elephants typically weigh between 4,500 and 6,800 kg (10,000 to 15,000 pounds) and females weigh slightly less. African Elephants have distinctive features that makes them easily identifiable on safaris such as; large ears that help regulate body temperature, a long trunk used for grasping food, drinking water, and social interactions, and tusks made of ivory, which are the elongated incisor teeth.

Elephants are also social animals and usually live in matriarchal (the oldest female) led herds. (the matriarch is also the wisest or most knowledgeable in the herd) leads the group, dictating movement. Most elephant herds are usually made up of females and their offspring, while the adult males tend to live alone or in small bachelor groups. Following the lead of the matriarch, the herd can be able to locate water sources and the best grazing grounds.

African Elephants are herbivores and on a daily feed on large amounts of grass and water. Elephants basically consume grasses, fruits, bark, and leaves, each consuming up to 150 kg (330 lbs) of vegetation per day. African elephants play an important role in shaping ecosystems – elephants usually knock down trees or create clearings, hence helping maintain the balance of the savanna and forest habitats they inhabit.

The best place to see the African elephants on Big Five Adventures in Tanzania is Tarangire National Park. The elephants in Tarangire are popular for being accustomed to human presence and can come close to safari vehicles allowing you to witness these majestic creatures up close and personal. The African lion is one of the most iconic wildlife species in Africa, a must-see while on your Big Five Adventures in Tanzania. Famously recognized as ‘‘the king of the jungle’’ the African lion is one of the only social cats that dwell in the African Savannas. The African lion is most sought after by most visitors traveling to Tanzania because of its strength and social structure.

Lions live in social groups popularly known as prides. A lion pride usually consists of females, their offspring, and a few males. The male lions only live in the pride for a short time and as they turn into sub-adults, they are chased out of the pride by the dominant males. They then wander alone or form coalitions with other males. Adult male lions have impressive manes, which vary in color from light blonde to dark brown or black. The mane is a sign of maturity and strength.

Female lions, or lionesses, are however smaller than males and lack manes, but they are known for their unique hunting skills and usually responsible for hunting for the pride. The females have a sleek, muscular build that allows them to run at high speeds of about 50 miles per hour in short bursts, making them formidable predators when hunting in groups.

There are several places where you can witness these magestic African big cant however, the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater floor offer a perfect opportunity to witness lion several lion pride on safaris. While on your Tanzania Big Five safari, visit these to location for unrivaled wildlife sightseeing experiences.

The Leopard (Panthera pardus)

The leopard is one of the most elusive animals, renowned for its stealth, agility, and beauty. This top predator is one of the masters of camouflage that is usually hidden in the vast African wilderness. Unlike other big predators like lions whose roars echo across various African wildernesses, the leopard is only heard by their fleeting movements and stunning beauty. Leopards have a relative size although they are sleek with a muscular build.

The leopard features a striking coat pattern, with distinctive rosettes (dark spots arranged in a rosette-like shape), making them one of the most admirable predators to witness on a safari in Africa.

Leopards are solitary animals and primarily nocturnal, they prefer hunting during the night, however, while on a Big Five Tanzania Adventure, the chances of witnessing these majestic predators are high. They are also known for their unique climbing ability and usually drag their kills up into trees to protect them from other scavengers like hyenas, cheetahs, and lions.

While on a big Five adventure in Tanzania, there are plenty of opportunities to witness leopards in top safari destinations like Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Ruisori River & Selous Game Reserve, Tarangire National Park, and Mahale Mountains National Park among others.

The African buffalo is a large mammal species that inhabits the vast sub-Sahara Africa. These magnificent mammal species are among the African Big Five animal species, the most sought after by most travelers to Africa on a wildlife safari tour. These majestic animals are known for their unique horns with fused bases that form a continuous bone shield across the top of the head.

The African buffaloes are social animals and usually live in complex group dynamics. Buffaloes usually form large herds, that can still be divided into smaller subgroups based on age, gender, and social status amongst them. The Buffalo herds usually consists of several related females, their offspring, and a few males. The dominant bull is usually in charge of leading the herd. The group/herd size can vary depending on the habitat, the herd size can range from a few dozen individuals to several hundred.

The females usually stay within the same herd throughout their lives, while males leave the herd when they reach maturity. The young bulls usually form bachelor groups or wander alone, only rejoining herds during mating seasons. The African Buffalo is the most commonly spotted member of the Africa Big Five animals and your chances of seeing them while on your Tanzania Big Five Adventure are very high. These stunning species are a joy to watch on your Tanzania Wildlife viewing safari especially if spotted in large herds or when being hunted by the top African predators like lions and leopards.

There are two rhino species in Tanzania; the black rhino (Diceros bicornis) and the white rhino (Ceratotherium simum). Both species the two rhino species used to roam across the vast savannas and forests of Tanzania’s wilderness however, due to poaching, habitat loss, and other human pressures, their population reduced and as of today, they are the most endangered animal species among all the African Big Five. However, with a great desire to protect these iconic wildlife species and strong conservation efforts, the rhino population in recent years has seen a slow but steady recovery across various conservancies in Tanzania, especially in national parks.
