A Detailed The Ultimate 10 Days Rwanda Safari itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Kigali International Airport and transfer to the hotel
On your first day of the 10 Days Rwanda Safari, a tour guide will pick you up from Kigali International Airport. You will easily identify the guide as he/she will be holding a placard with your name. After a meet and greet with your guide, he/she will then drive you to the hotel where you will freshen up and relax as you prepare for the real safari beginning the following day.
Day 2: Drive to Akagera National Park and have an evening game drive
After breakfast in Kigali, you will then embark on a drive to Akagera National Park for about 3 hours. Arriving in time for lunch, you will have a meal and relax a bit as you wait for an evening game drive. While on a game drive in Akagera National Park, some of the animals to see include the big five game which are the elephants, buffalos, rhinos, lions and leopards. Other wildlife species include zebras, giraffes, hyenas, Topis, Impalas, elands, oribis, duikers and many more. After the game drive, you return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Morning game drive and afternoon boat cruise on Lake Ihema in Akagera National Park
You will be served breakfast early in the morning and then head out for a game drive in the scenic savannah plains of Akagera National Park once again for about 3 hours depending on the animal sightings and interests of the day. You will then return to the lode for lunch after the drive. In the afternoon, you will head out for a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. The boat ride offers great sightings of hippos and crocodiles in the water and other wildlife species including birds. After the boat cruise, you will be transferred back to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park
After your breakfast at leisure, you will be transferred to Nyungwe National Park. The drive is for about 5-6 hours from Akagera to Nyungwe National Park. Upon arrival, check in to your lodge, have lunch and relax for the rest of the time at the lodge.
Day 5: Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National Park
Following your early morning breakfast, you will be driven to the park headquarters for the start of a Chimpanzee trekking experience. Chimpanzee trekking involves walking until you find the chimpanzees as they also move from one place to another. Upon meeting them, you are allowed one hour in their presence as you watch them grooming, jumping in tree branches while making noise and take as many photos you can to reminisce the moments while back home.
After the trek, you return to the trek start point where you will meet your driver guide for a transfer to back to your accommodation.
Day 6: Canopy walk in Nyungwe National Park
After breakfast, you will be driven to the park headquarters where you will be briefed about the canopy walk that you are yet to experience this morning. The walk on the suspension about 70 meters high from the forest floor last for about 2 hours and Nyungwe forest has the best canopy walk in East Africa. After the canopy walk, return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation.
Day 7: Transfer from Nyungwe to Volcanoes National Park
You will have breakfast at leisure and then embark on the drive from Nyungwe to Volcanoes National Park. The drive lasts about 5-6 hours and upon arrival you will check in to the hotel, freshen up, and relax for the rest of the afternoon and evening.
Day 8: Mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park
After an early morning breakfast, your driver guide will drive you to the park headquarters in Kinigi where you will be briefed about the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking in Rwanda by the warden. By 8:30 am, the park ranger will then lead you to the gorilla trekking start point. A maximum of 8 tourists are allocated per gorilla family. Gorilla trekking takes about 2-6 hours walking through the bamboo forest along with armed rangers. Nonetheless, only 1 hour (60 minutes) is spent in the presence of mountain gorillas.
The time spent while looking for gorillas in the forest in unpredictable, depending on the gorilla group’s movement but gorilla groups in Rwanda are known to move for shorter distances, making gorilla trekking a bit easier. After spending one hour in the presence of gorillas, you trek back to the gorilla trekking start point, where you will find your driver guide waiting to drive you back to the lodge.
Day 9: Golden Monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Today is a day for Golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park where they co-exist with mountain gorillas. There are two troops of golden monkeys in Rwanda, with the largest found in Mount Sabinyo with about 80 individuals, and mostly visited. Golden monkeys have unique characteristics and canbe easily identified by their color. You ought to be at the park headquarters for bthe riefing as early as 7:00 am. After the golden monkey trek, you will head back to the lodge for lunch. Relax a bit as you prepare to transfer to Kigali for an overnight.
Day 10: Kigali City tour and transfer to Kigali International Airport
Today is the last day of your 10 Days safari in Rwanda. You will have breakfast at leisure at the hotel and check out. You will be then taken for Kigali City tour for sightseeing and also visit the genocide museum. Have lunch and then transfer to Kigali International Airport for your flight back home.
