The annual Wildebeest Migration in Tanzania and Kenya with thousands of animals is one of the largest animal migrations one can ever sight and surely one of the world’s natural wonders. Every year the wildebeest move in millions and follow literally a similar pattern which makes planning necessary. That’s why this best Guide for 2026 – 2027 Wildebeest Migration safaris comes in handy.

It is easy to know that the wildebeest will be passing in a specific route or the rains will trigger their movement but knowing when exactly that will happen is very important.

Each wildebeest migration constitutes over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles moving from Serengeti National Park of Tanzania and Masai Mara National Park of Kenya.

Annually migrating across the Serengeti Masai Mara ecosystem, the wildebeest migrate with the sole purpose of finding green pastures.

When the rains are in the Serengeti region the wildebeest will be there to find pasture and when the rains are in Kenya’s Masai Mara, the herds will migrate to Kenya.

Though their cycle is a little predictable, where the wildebeest can be seen is dependent on where the rains fall.

It’s an annual event undertaken by the wildebeest as one and a half million wildebeest accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and numerous other antelope species move in search of greener pastures.

Highlights about the Wildebeest migration

The most dramatic moments of a wildebeest migration happen during the River crossings at River Mara. However, the wildebeest do not cross over at the same time.

When they arrive at the river, some cross immediately and continue in the other direction, some hang around to graze as some even don’t cross and return backward.

Seeing those that cross survive the crocodiles in the river is both heartbreaking and amazing at the same time.

The migration is annual, therefore animals move through the different spots all year round. However, many people know that it’s only between July and October when the migration happens.

July to October is also the best time to tour when the wildebeest are also crossing the Mara River. This makes it an appropriate time to see the dramatic crossings as well as other wildlife in the park.
