Uganda Is Ebola Free: What American and British Travellers Need to Know About Uganda Safaris 2027

Are you an American or British citizen planning a safari in 2027? Uganda remains one of Africa’s most rewarding destinations for travellers, especially those interested in primates tracking experiences, including mountain gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, and wildlife safaris (Big Five Viewing Safaris). Despite the news of an Ebola outbreak in 2026 that understandably raised questions among international visitors planning holidays in East Africa, Uganda is Ready to welcome visitors in 2027 after declaring Ebola Free. Uganda Is Ebola Free after the Ministry of Health officially declared the 2026 Ebola outbreak over on 28 July 2026. In their statement, “the Minister for Health, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, officially announced Uganda Ebola Free.

The World Health Organization (WHO) also announced the end of the outbreak on 27 August 2026. In their statement, they said, “The World Health Organization (WHO) today welcomed the end of the Ebola outbreak due to the Bundibugyo species in Uganda. This follows 42 consecutive days without a new confirmed case since the country’s last patient, an imported case, was discharged from care on 16 July 2026. The completion of the 42 days, equivalent to twice the upper limit of the incubation period for Ebola, is a critical step, as it provides an additional safeguard that no chains of transmission associated with the last imported case have been missed. The 42-day countdown is the internationally established benchmark for determining that transmission linked to an Ebola outbreak has ended.

“Uganda has demonstrated that with decisive action, Ebola outbreaks can be brought under control quickly,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “With a focus on preparedness, increased surveillance to find potential cases in health facilities and communities, and careful management of points of entry, countries can keep people and goods moving while ensuring people stay safe, or receive care if they are sick.”  Read the Full World Health Organization statement here. If you were planning to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking in 2027 or a Uganda safari holiday in 2027, this should boost your confidence.
