One of the most interesting primates to trek while on Uganda safaris is the Chimpanzees. Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is almost the second most popular tracking activity after gorilla trekking.
Uganda has a high population of chimpanzees with close to 5000 of them in the county most of them in their natural habitats.
Several destinations in Uganda are habitats for chimpanzees. Some spots are natural habitats for chimpanzee tracking whereas others are not natural habitats but you can see the chimps. Here is where you can see chimpanzees and trek chimpanzees in Uganda
Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park
Kibale Forest hosts the highest total population of chimpanzees. The park has over a thousand chimpanzees and is still home to over 13 primate species, that’s why it’s dubbed the primate capital of the world.
Kibale Forest National Park is very accessible for chimpanzee trekking and a 3-day chimpanzee trekking safari is a good itinerary. You can also tailor the trip with a visit to other parks like Murchison Falls National Park or Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Budongo Forest – Discounted Uganda Chimpanzee Trekking permits
Budongo forest is the closest spot from Kampala-Uganda’s capital for tourists to trek chimpanzees. The forest is part of the Murchison Falls Conservation Area.
2 habituated chimpanzee families can be trekked by those interested in the activity. You can take a trip to the forest just for chimp trekking or take a 4-day safari to Murchison Falls National Park.
Kyambura Gorge – Queen Elizabeth National Park
Kyambura Gorge is the only destination in Uganda where you will have to visit the chimps below sea level. The chimpanzees live in a gorge that is about 100m deep at its deepest spot. Unlike other chimpanzees, this population lives below the gorge, and makes it an extraordinary experience to trek them.
However, the chimpanzees here are few, and therefore sightings are not that marvelous. If you want to have a magical experience, then trek in Kyambura you may never find this experience anywhere else. The trekking safari can be tailored with a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Best time for Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda
Chimpanzee trekking or tracking as referred by many is open to tourists on Uganda tours all year round but the best time is normally in the dry season. The best time to visit Kibale National Park for chimpanzee trekking is in the season of June to September and December to February when the forest trails are generally drier therefore making trekking easier.
In the other months between March to May and September to November, the weather is characterized by heavy rainfall, and therefore the forest trails, paths, and walkways become slippery and more challenging to trek through.
For other sites including Budongo forest, Kalinzu forest, and Kyambura Gorge, the best time to go chimpanzee trekking is during December to March and also June to July when the rains are less and trekking is easier. These habitats have different forest cover and therefore the rainy seasons may vary slightly.
However, it is important to note that during the dry season, the chimpanzees also find it easier to move through the forest for longer hours and therefore trek a lot.
Therefore, during the dry, it may require more strength to trek for longer hours since the chimpanzees also easily move to places deeper in the forest.
In the rainy season, however, chimpanzees have a lot of food in the forest and therefore do not trek for longer distances searching for food which makes them easier to trek.
If you love primates the chimpanzee trekking must be one of the activities you choose to undertake while on an Uganda safari. Book with us whether a chimpanzee trekking or Uganda gorilla tracking safari tailored with any other activities.
