Not famously atop Uganda safari destination, many tourists miss out on the adventures within the mountain and foothills of Mount Elgon. Mount Elgon National Park tour activities are those that offer rejuvenation to the body and soul and cannot be missed. Mount Elgon is an extinct volcano with the largest volcanic base in the world covering 4000 square kilometers.
The park is located in the eastern region of the country which is widely known as the adventurous region of Uganda with spots like the Nile River and Sipi falls for adventure activities. Mount Elgon National Park, Pian-Upe Wildlife Reserve, Matheniko Wildlife Reserve, and Bokora wildlife Reserve all lie in the eastern region of Uganda with several attractions for tourists to explore.
The park is about 250 kilometers east of Kampala – Uganda’s capital on the border between Uganda and Kenya. This makes it a good spot to visit even when continuing for a Kenya safari or when coming into Uganda from Kenya.
Here are the several activities tourists can explore during a visit to Mount Elgon National Park;
Hiking: The mountain is not difficult to climb as it is at a lower altitude and therefore favorable for hikers that are inexperienced in the activity. During the hike, hikers can also check out the vast caves, waterfalls, cliffs, and gorges. The wide caldera is surrounded by several hot springs that are a welcome delight for any climbers who get to reach that high.
Hiking around Sipi falls offers very stunning views of the high Kapchorwa raised land and the Karamoja and Teso plains below. Most hiking routes start from the Sipi falls area. The most popular hiking route starts in Budadiri and follows the Sasa trail to the summit and then descends down to the Sipi trail back into the Sipi Falls.
Visit Sipi Falls: Sipi Falls is a series of three waterfalls located in Uganda’s eastern district of Kapchorwa at the edge of Mount Elgon National Park. Of the three waterfalls at Sipi, the longest drop is 100m. The falls are formed by the Sipi River as it cascades downhill from the upper slopes of Mount Elgon into the Kyoga Basin.
With a cooler climate, this is a very nice place to unwind, relax, and literally chill out away from the very busy towns and cities. Other activities that can be done at Sipi include abseiling and community tours.
Birding: Mount Elgon National Park is excellent for birders with over 300 species. Some of the bird species in the park include the endangered Lammergeyer, the white-bellied Go-away, Jackson’s Hornbill, Fawn-colored Lark, Long-tailed Nightjar, African Grey Flycatcher, the Yellow-bellied Eremomela, and many more.
Though majorly a hiking destination wildlife like elephants, antelopes, and monkeys can be seen in the lower slopes.
Cultural tours: The area in which the park is situated is home to the Bamasaba (Gisu), the satiny, and the Ndorobos who mainly dwell deep within the forest of Benet. The Bamasaba or the Bagisu consider Mount Elgon to be the embodiment of their founding father Masaba and refer to the mountain by this name.
The Bamasaba are the dominant people of this area who also believe that their ancestor Mundu and Sera emerged from a hole in the extinct volcano. The Bamasaba people around the mountain have amazing cultures that anyone interested in a cultural tour will enjoy.
One of the major cultural practices is the Imbalu which is a circumcision practice for all the boy children in the region as they transition from childhood to adulthood. The occasion involves several activities like dancing, singing which is very interesting and engaging to witness.
