Kazinga Channel – Queen Elizabeth National Park

The Kazinga Channel is a 32-kilometer-wide natural channel that connects two lakes known as Lake George and Lake Edward. In the east is Lake George and Lake Edward in the west respectively. The Kazinga Channel is one of the most significant areas in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Kazinga Channel has great picturesque views of the amazing wildlife in the park as they come to quench their thirst at the shores.

Queen Elizabeth National Park covers a land area of about 1,978 sq. km. Lake George is a tiny lake with an overall depth of 2.4 meters and 250 sq. km. It is fed by several streams that flow from the Rwenzori Mountains which are the highest mountain ranges in Africa. From the mountains, the streams flow to Lake Edward then to the Kazinga Channel, and finally to Lake Edward in the West. Therefore the channel flows from East to West.

Wildlife in Kazinga Channel

Shores of the Kazinga channel attract a large number of wild animals, reptiles, and birds. The largest population of hippos in the whole world can be found at the channel as well as plentiful Nile crocodiles.

All of these animals and bird species can easily be seen during a boat cruise which is extremely rewarding and one of the best launch trips to engage in during a Uganda wildlife safari. A boat cruise experience is always run at 3 am and 5 pm and at times 11 am and 1 pm local time. The plains of this channel offer the most breathtaking views for spotting game.

Some of the wildlife species that can be seen on a launch trip at the Kazinga channel include buffaloes, elephants, hippos, crocodiles and several other wildlife species in the Kasenyi plains within the grassland thickets.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is also famed for the tree-climbing lions, however, these can best be seen in the eastern section of the Kasenyi plains and the Kasese road where they feed on the resident Uganda kobs within that area. They can best be seen on a morning or afternoon game drive.

How to get to Queen Elizabeth National Park – Kazinga Channel

The park is located in western Uganda and can be accessed by road. It takes about 5-6 hours to reach the park from Kampala on a surfaced road via Mbarara covering about 420km. The other route is via Fort Portal which takes about 410km.

To have a great tour of Queen Elizabeth National Park, you should spend at least 2 days in the park. Have at least a game drive and boat cruise to enjoy the beauty in the park. You can also include a visit to the park with a long Uganda safari tailored with a visit to the Bwindi forest for gorilla trekking or birding.
